Munster’s Juneteenth Celebration Grows in Spirit and Community

Munster residents gathered on a warm Thursday evening at Wilbur Wright Middle School to celebrate Juneteenth, marking the second year of what organizers hope will become a lasting community tradition. The event, organized with support from local students, educators, and community leaders, brought together families, students, and neighbors in a joyful celebration of freedom and togetherness.

“We loved our event yesterday because it showed the best of our community,” said Wilbur Wright Middle School Principal Bojan Jovanovic. “Our residents came together for a special evening. We had a lot of families with little kids, but also many students from kindergarten to high school.”

According to Jovanovic, attendance at this year’s event more than doubled compared to last year, with something for everyone to enjoy—music, food trucks, gaming trucks, a bounce house slide, and family-friendly activities. He praised the involvement of students from the MHS Black Culture Club and the STM Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Awareness (IDEA) Team as the spark that brought the event to life.

“Our students are the driving force behind all our decisions as a school corporation,” Jovanovic said. “This whole event started because of their initiative.”

Candice Simpson-Payne, a celebration volunteer and mother of two Munster students, emphasized that Juneteenth provides an opportunity for recognition and restoration—not division. “In a place like Munster, where Black residents often feel invisible, it matters that our history is not only acknowledged but respected out loud,” she said.

Joy McCann, who helped secure donations for treats and entertainment such as the gaming trucks and coordinated activities, was seen greeting participants to ensure everyone felt welcome and celebrated. “This year’s event was special, and I’m grateful for it,” she said. “Everything came together with intention, teamwork, and community love.”

A strong sense of belonging and connection was evident throughout the festivities. “I believe that when we know better, we do better, and everything we do should grow stronger each time—with love, purpose, and excellence,” McCann said.

Simpson-Payne added that the positive feedback from attendees was overwhelming. “People kept saying how important it was to keep this going—and I believe it will only get better every year.”

The organizers all expressed their gratitude to everyone who participated and encouraged residents who want to get involved to help grow the event in the future.
