Bike Shop Rolls into Munster, Bringing Community-Focused Cycling Options

Greenway Bikehouse has set up shop in town, bringing a fresh option for cycling enthusiasts, commuters, and families alike. What started as a pandemic-era idea in Lansing has grown into a thriving business that will now call it’s Munster location in Harrison Ridge Plaza home. The store is set to officially open on March 4th.

The shop’s proprietor Cam Harvey, was working at a local college while his wife was employed at a non-profit, and found himself with extra time during the pandemic to explore the trails near their Lansing home. That experience inspired him to invest in the local community and transition to a business with a more personal and local focus.

“I got the idea of doing something to invest in the local community, transition out of the jobs we had, and do something with a more local focus,” Harvey shared.

Recognizing a lack of bike shops in the area—aside from Goodspeed in Homewood, Ridge Cyclery in Highland, and Trek in Schererville—he saw a gap in the market. With family support and careful planning, Greenway Bikehouse was launched in April 2022 in a temporary location on Lake Street in Lansing and then to a location on Wentworth near the Pennsy Greenway Trail in 2023 before ultimately settling in Munster.

The move to Munster was influenced by multiple factors, including proximity to the upcoming train station, the Monon Trail and their new home Munster. “We liked the idea of being intentional in our community, and with our kids now going to school here, it was a big factor,” Harvey explained.

The high foot traffic in the area and increased visibility played a crucial role in the decision. “Being able to come to a space where there is a lot more natural foot traffic will give us a lot more exposure, so I think we’ll get more business from that.”

Greenway Bikehouse carries a range of bikes, initially targeting affordable but high-quality options beyond what big-box retailers offer. Brands such as Jamis, Batch, and Retrospec provide traditional bicycles in the $400-$600 range. Additionally, the shop introduced Aventon e-bikes upon opening, and demand quickly outpaced traditional bikes.

“Since we’ve opened, we’ve sold more e-bikes than traditional bikes,” Harvey said. The selection has now expanded to include Reid, Aventon, Serfas, Himiway, Batch, Radio Flyer and Vtuvia e-bikes, targeting a price range of $1,200-$2,500 for high-quality, affordable options.

The e-bikes have found a strong market among older riders. “There are a lot of people in their 50s, 60s, and even 70s realizing that riding a bike up a hill or even into the wind can be challenging,” he noted. “The electric bike gives them the opportunity to have motor assist as needed, which gives them confidence to ride for 30 minutes or an hour.”

The shop also caters to younger commuters who appreciate the assistance of an e-bike for getting to work without breaking a sweat, as well as families with cargo bike options. They also provide repair and maintenance services on bikes and most e-bikes. While there can be a wait time for tune ups and repairs, Harvey says most days they can fix a flat tire on the spot so people can continue their ride.

With a new home in Munster, Greenway Bikehouse is looking forward to growing its presence in the community while serving local cyclists with quality bikes and service. The combination of a prime location, high visibility, and a focus on intentional community involvement makes it a welcome addition to the local business landscape.

The store officially opened this week and will keep store hours Tuesday through Friday 10am-6pm and Saturdays 10am-4pm.
