Munster Library Program Helps Seniors Navigate Today’s Technology

If you feel that you’re falling behind on the latest technology, put yourself in a senior’s shoes. Apps and internet savvy is becoming an increasingly important part of everyday life, from managing healthcare and finding discounts online to staying connected with family and friends. Recognizing that many older adults want help navigating these tools, the Fortunately, Munster Public Library is launching a series of free educational seminars designed specifically for seniors.

The library is partnering with Indiana University Northwest to bring Senior Planet programming to Munster, offering practical classes on technology, communication, and digital literacy for adults ages 60 and older.

“Many patrons have said they want more programming and classes that are geared towards seniors, and the programs that Indiana University Northwest offers through their Senior University initiative is a step in that direction,” said Michael Ayala, Branch Head of the Munster Public Library. “My goal is to offer more programs at the library that are geared towards ages 55+ as I gather more input in the future.”

The seminars are coordinated through Indiana University Northwest’s Center for Urban and Regional Excellence (CURE) and Senior Planet, a program from Older Adults Technology Services (OATS) from AARP. The initiative brings free educational opportunities to libraries and senior centers throughout Northwest Indiana, helping older adults build confidence with technology while remaining connected to their communities.

Topics in the Munster series will cover a variety of practical subjects, including digital coupon tools, social media, selecting a new computer, protecting personal medical information, adapting to changing landline technology, and using MyChart. While many of the sessions focus on technology, the broader goal is to help participants stay informed, independent, and connected in a rapidly changing world.
