Forget waiting nervously for a shadow—this Groundhog Day is all about coming out of winter hibernation for a great cause. On Friday, January 31, Humane Indiana Wildlife is hosting an early Groundhog Day Celebration that turns a classic tradition into a lively, family-friendly event supporting local wildlife in need.
Taking place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the celebration blends education, animals, food, and community fun into one winter-friendly outing. Guests can enjoy Wildlife Ambassador Animal Meet & Greets, explore local vendors and exhibitors, and grab a bite from food trucks serving a variety of options throughout the day.
The spotlight moment belongs to Southshore Sally, Humane Indiana Wildlife’s groundhog ambassador, during the always-anticipated Shadow Showdown. Sally will make her seasonal prediction and officially kick off the festivities. As a non-releasable ambassador animal, she also represents the importance of protecting native wildlife and educating the community about their role in Indiana’s ecosystem.
For younger guests, a Bluey mascot will be on hand for special meet-and-greet sessions, paired with story time led by local community dignitaries—adding a playful spark and encouraging a love of learning, nature, and community connection.
“This event goes beyond the excitement of Groundhog Day,” said Nicole Harmon, Senior Director of Wildlife Rehabilitation at Humane Indiana. “It’s an opportunity to connect people with wildlife and support the lifesaving care we provide to injured and orphaned animals each year.”
That mission is echoed by Brian Fitzpatrick, CEO of Humane Indiana, who says, “Groundhog Day is a fun tradition, but it also gives us an opportunity to remind people that wildlife needs our care year-round. Every ticket purchased helps ensure injured and orphaned animals receive the second chances they deserve.”
All proceeds from the event directly support Humane Indiana Wildlife, funding rehabilitation, medical care, and public education for native wildlife across the region.
The Groundhog Day Celebration is open to all ages and designed to be both entertaining and educational—making it a perfect mid-winter outing for families, animal lovers, and anyone ready to celebrate something fun and meaningful.
