A New Groundhog Day Tradition Will Provide Family Fun in NWI

Move over, Punxsutawney Phil—there’s a new weather-predicting groundhog in town! This Groundhog Day, Sunday, February 2, 2025, Humane Indiana Wildlife is inviting the community to the Inaugural Groundhog Day Shadow Showdown. The event will be held from 8 AM to 12 PM at the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority in Hammond, Indiana, promising a morning filled with fun, food, and philanthropy.

Forget the old-school forecasts—Humane Indiana’s own female groundhog ambassador is stepping into the spotlight to predict the Midwest’s winter fate at 8 AM sharp. Unlike her Pennsylvania counterpart, this furry forecaster has a mission beyond meteorology. As a non-releasable wildlife ambassador, she symbolizes the importance of conservation and education, reminding attendees that every animal plays a crucial role in our ecosystem.

Help Name the Star of the Show

What’s a leading lady without a name? Humane Indiana Wildlife is letting the community take part in history by submitting name ideas for their newest ambassador through a Facebook contest. The winning name will be announced live during the event, adding an extra layer of excitement to this fresh tradition.

“This inaugural event isn’t just about a shadow—it’s about shining a light on the importance of every animal and the critical work of wildlife conservation,” said Nicole Harmon, Wildlife Rehab Director at Humane Indiana. “Our groundhog ambassador is here to inspire, educate, and generate awareness for the wildlife in our care.”

More Than Just a Forecast

Groundhog Day may be known for its quirky folklore, but at its heart, this event is about something bigger. Proceeds from the celebration will go directly toward Humane Indiana Wildlife’s efforts to rehabilitate and care for injured and orphaned wildlife across the region.

“Groundhog Day takes on a whole new meaning with our ambassador leading the way,” said Brian Fitzpatrick, CEO of Humane Indiana. “Her forecast might be playful, but her message is serious: every animal is here for a reason, and it’s up to all of us to preserve and protect.”
